3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade?
Added by Mike Fisher about 1 year ago
I recently installed Nexenta CE 3.1.0 by downloading the .iso from the website. This was to upgrade from a 3.0.4 version that for some reason wasn't upgradable.
My current setup looks like:
NMS Version 3.1.0 (r9356) NMC Version 3.1.0 (r9348) NMV Version 3.1.0 (r9371)
I'd like to upgrade to 3.1.1 because I believe it will address some CIFS/LDAP issues I'm facing. However, when I run setup appliance upgrade
I get the following error:
Unable to establish TCP/IP connection with remote APT repository. Please contact networking administrator to resolve this issue
What is the recommended way for me to upgrade? My machine can poke the internet (I've used apg-get install successfully) so I don't think it is a routes issue.
Thanks, Mike

I'll add that running 'setup appliance show upgrade' gives me
RELEASE STABILITY DESCRIPTION
3.1 * testing Open Storage Appliance v3.1.1
and my /etc/apt/sources.list has:
deb http://apt.nexentastor.org/3.1 hardy-testing main contrib non-free
deb-src http://apt.nexentastor.org/3.1 hardy-testing main contrib non-free
Thanks Again, Mike

You might save yourself some considerable time by using the 3.1.1 CE media (on the same CE download page). I don't know why the 3.1.0 media is still linked to on here; http://www.nexentastor.org/projects/site/wiki/CommunityEdition
You should be able to do a complete re-install from 3.1.1 (then running "setup appliance upgrade") and then just importing the zvols and then just setting up the CIFS permissions/iscsi configuration again etc without any dataloss (I've done this multiple times before).

Thanks - I actually downloaded the 3.1.1 iso and re-imaged. But the strange thing was even with the 3.1.1 media, I stil had 3.1.0 versions of nms/nmc/nmv, but the OS version said 3.1.1.
I still had the same problem with the "setup appliance upgrade" so I just did an "apt-get upgrade" and now I have this:
NMS Version 3.1.1-6882 (r9488) NMC Version 3.1.1-6622 (r9469) NMV Version 3.1.1-6608 (r9456) OS Version 3.1.1
These seem to be the latest revisions, though on some modules there seem to have been a regression. For example, the ID Mapping (CIFS) management form is back to the old 'textarea' format, not the new-and-improved form I noticed briefly.
I really need to make sure I have the version of these modules that fixed the CIFS+LDAP+Workgroup authentication issues. Can you confirm if I have the latest?
Thanks for your time :)

so all iso's reachable by the public are at least 3.1.1. 3.1.0 only went live for about 3 hours and was immediately replaced with 3.1.1.
your base load is 3.1.1, anything else is a typo.

Linda, sorry to say that, but when the 3.1.0 upgrade repository was pull, the iso download was available the next weeks and was only replaced by 3.1.1 later. Maybe a mistake from the webmaster but I have checked that several times, for sure not less surprised that the upgrade repository was removed but the install iso was still available.
Greetings,

3.1.1 ISO contains fixes, which are related to upgrade process and were found after release of 3.1.0. The ISO does not contains any fixes to NMS, NMC, NMV, so you see that after installation these parts have version 3.1.0, but OS has version 3.1.1. All issues which we found after release 3.1.0 related to EE version. CE does not contains affected parts. Now APT contains fixes for bugs, which we found after release 3.1.1, so now after upgrade you have NMS, NMC, NMV v.3.1.1-rXXXX
Thanks.

thank-you for finally taking down the mirror link to the 3.1.0 install media - this must have been the source of many issues that people were experiencing. Perhaps you want to take a quick look at the home page and perhaps amend the latest news to reflect 3.1.1 as well to help avoid any further confusion?
RE: 3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade? - Added by Mike Fisher about 1 year ago
I did a copy/paste so no typo - I can confirm that when I installed the 3.1.1 ISO (from the public FTP site) the 3.1.0 versions of NMS, NMC, and NMV were running. The versions of those modules seemed to contain the 'fixes' as outlined by the 3.1.1 release notes - most noticeable to me was the idmap web form change. Now that I'm on 3.1.1 versions (after doing apt-get upgrade) I see the old idmap form.

Thanks Roman for clarifying - so just to confirm, what versions of NMS,NMC,NMV should we have running??
RE: 3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade? - Added by Roman Strashkin about 1 year ago
Latest stable versions:
NMS: 3.1.1-6882 (r9488)
NMC: 3.1.1-6622 (r9469)
NMV: 3.1.1-6608 (r9456)
RE: 3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade? - Added by Mike Fisher about 1 year ago
Thanks Roman - can you also confirm that those versions include the CIFS+LDAP Authentication fixes?
RE: 3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade? - Added by Peter Kranz about 1 year ago
A setup appliance upgrade currently takes to you to:
NMS Version 3.1.1-6986 (r9508) NMC Version 3.1.1-6904 (r9490) NMV Version 3.1.1-6829 (r9491)
Is it a bad idea to be running these versions? I.e. should we revert to the latest stable versions you have specified?
RE: 3.1 / 3.1.1 Upgrade? - Added by Mike Fisher about 1 year ago
I think those newer updates include the fix for Mac OS X file sharing. Linda or Roman can confirm. I've noticed that at least in one instance I am able to use SMB from my wife's mac book air (running Lion) to my Nexenta box after updating.

Unfortunately the fix for Mac OS is not ready yet. Our QA is testing it.

So can someone tell me how to upgrade to 3.1.1? Doing
"setup appliance upgrade"
just tells me there's no upgrade, yet my versions are :
nexenta (OS v3.0.5, NMS v3.0.5 (r9382))
Do I need to do a fresh install from ISO? That seems a bit poor!
