IceWeb

Added by John Wright about 1 year ago

Everyone,

I've been looking for a ZFS/NFS based solution for a VMware virtual infrastructure. I came across a product called IceWeb http://www.iceweb.com/ that looks very similar to Nexentastor. Has anyone ever heard of this product? Thanks.

The thing that is different about nexentastor is that it is software only. You have no vendor lockin for disks or enclosures. You can make a large pool out of multiple enclosures from several vendors. You also can do incremental add of disks and have the same features whether you have 1TB or 100TB.

Are you saying that IceWeb is the same thing as Nexentastor, but because they are offering the product as a complete solution they can put their name on it? I've seen storage solutions from Aberdeen, Pogo Linux, and Racktop and they proudly stated that their solutions were powered by Nexenta.

Do you know anything about the company. I like the fact that they include a 3 year warranty with their product, but it is a new company and if it goes under I would hate to be stranded without support. I wonder if the company did go out of business, if I could switch support over to Nexenta (provided that it is actually a Nexenta based product).

Thanks.

lemme poke around.

NexentaStor is an attempt to deal effectively with inexpensive "dumb" storage with a smart operating system. Iceweb's unified storage systems are next generation "smart" storage for use with any operating system. With increasing storage volume and increasing speeds required, I think that in the long run, the "smart" storage approach will win out especially for Big Data applications.

Here's an item on Iceweb support from their website:

So the question around support. For our partners that oem our software and if they go out of business, we have a process to help you continue that support.

One more thing about big data, especially things like hadoop, personally i see what will be necessary there is a management tool which will be able to cross frames and look at all of the storage in the pool as a single name space. For individual nodes, the architecture is designed to have dumb(just) storage on the nodes.
