First time you need to login to system via native console (not ssh) and setup options for your appliance: login: root passwd: nexenta

Also, you can login as admin (password: nexenta) then su as root.

If you installed system then after reboot you were supposed to get into first wizard. (accept license agreement, enter license key, setup network props, ...) Have you passed this step? If 'yes', then you should have seen the message about GUI.
Without first step you cannot run the Appliance. (including WebGUI)

Apparently the username / passwords entered during the wizards that run in the web interface at first login don't work to allow the system to shutdown.
On mine, when I tried to login at the console, no matter if capslock was on or off, or if the shift key was engaged or not, anything I typed was in CAPS, which wasn't the case in the dialog generated by the web interface when trying to do a proper shutdown. This condition resolved itself after reboot.
