The closest one. e.g. if a dataset says disabled and the pool says enabled, the dataset's setting is closer as you walk up the tree. You can tell by doing something like 'zfs get sync tank/xxx' or whatever. If it came from a parent entry, it should say 'inherited from xxx'.
